Goodwell Investments selected as a Top 50 impact fund (IA50) 2022

Goodwell Investments has been included on the IA 50 for the fifth year running. This list is the industry’s first publicly available, online database for impact investors, family offices, financial advisors and institutional investors that features a diversified listing of private capital fund managers that deliver social and environmental impact as well as financial returns.

Goodwell Investments is delighted to announce that it has been included on the ImpactAssets 50 2022 for the fifth consecutive year. The list is the first free, publicly available database that provides a gateway into the world of impact investing for investors and their financial advisors, offering an easy way to identify experienced impact investment firms and explore the landscape of potential investment options. Applications are reviewed by a Review Committee of veteran Impact Investors.

This year marks the eleventh edition of the IA 50, which now includes the IA 50 Emerging Impact Managers list and IA 50 Emeritus Impact Managers list. Across all three categories, 143 impact fund managers reported assets totalling $116.96 billion invested across a range of asset classes and impact themes.

“We are thrilled to once again be recognised as a consistently high-performing fund manager”, commented Els Boerhof, Managing Partner at Goodwell Investments. “Being selected for IA50 is a reflection of the efforts of our investment teams in Kenya and South Africa and joint venture partners, Alitheia Capital in Nigeria and Aavishkaar in India. It further validates our ongoing commitment to supporting inclusive growth and we will be launching a new fund for Africa this year.”

Impact fund managers remained focused on delivering both positive impact and investment performance. A total of 74% of IA 50 fund managers targeted market rate or above rates of return and 97% delivered either in line or above their target returns.

Goodwell was selected by IA 50 based on a variety of factors, including its more than 15-year history of SME impact investing, extensive geographic network, and dedication to supporting inclusive growth through investments in emerging economies. This commitment is demonstrated by the fact that 100% of the firm’s assets under management are impact investments. Since its founding, Goodwell’s 37 SME investees have provided access to basic goods and services to over 400 million un(der)served people across 47 countries globally. Going forward, the firm is focused on investing in African entrepreneurs who are helping their communities build financial resilience, increase food security and reduce inequalities.

“We’re excited about this year’s IA 50, with its dramatic expansion and diversification of impact fund managers across a spectrum of strategies, geographies and investment targets. This group of managers reflects the intentionality of our manager selection process to provide investors with a resource that shines a light on the breadth and diversity of impact fund managers. These managers bring unique and informed perspectives to the challenges impact investing is addressing”, commented Jed Emerson, Senior Fellow, ImpactAssets, IA 50 Review Committee Chair, Global Lead, Impact Investing, Tiedemann Advisors.

“As impact investing continues its inexorable rise, it is critical to provide investors with a curated, objective evaluation of impact fund managers. The IA 50 is built to filter out the noise that is growing louder in impact investing and help investors focus on deep, meaningful impact”, added Jennifer Kenning, CEO and Co-Founder, Align Impact, IA 50 Senior Investment Advisor.

About Impact Assests 50

The IA 50 is the first publicly available database that provides a gateway into the world of impact investing for investors and their financial advisors, offering an easy way to identify experienced impact investment firms and explore the landscape of potential investment options. The IA 50 is intended to illustrate the breadth of impact investment fund managers operating today, though it is not a comprehensive list. Firms have been selected to demonstrate a wide range of impact investing activities across geographies, sectors and asset classes. The IA 50 is not an index or investable platform and does not constitute an offering or recommend specific products. It is not a replacement for due diligence. In order to be considered for the IA 50 2021, fund managers needed to have at least $25 million in assets under management, more than three years of experience as a firm with impact investing, documented social and/or environmental impact and be available for US investment. Additional details on the selection process are available here.
