Background/ Role motivation

Goodwell Investments is a social mission driven pioneering investment firm which, through the means of private equity, promotes financial inclusion, fintech and inclusive growth in sectors providing basic goods and services and income generation opportunities to the underserved (e.g. in agri, logistics and mobility, education, health care, energy and financial sector). The company has a high touch investment approach, providing active support to fast growing highly scalable businesses. The company prides itself on its inclusive non-hierarchical culture and collaborative approach to work.

Goodwell has invested equity in early stage businesses in financial services and technology companies in India and Africa, ranging from classical microfinance to mobile payments, rural banking, affordable housing finance to merchant payment networks and public transport technology. The business is in the process of raising their fourth fund, focused on inclusive growth across Sub-Sahara Africa.

Their teams are based in Amsterdam, Lagos, Nairobi and Cape Town. The new fund will enable it to triple its portfolio in the next three years. Hence the need for a senior individual to join the team in Cape Town to build his/her own portfolio of start-ups, support the team in the execution of their duties and guide them on business processes.

Position summary

The Investment Associate is tasked with building up and managing a network of key relationships within the private sector to generate investment opportunities for Goodwell Investments in Southern Africa. Deal origination, deal making and investment oversight is required, with a strong ‘hands-on’ approach to ensure that businesses within the portfolio are appropriately supported to realize their growth potential and meet their impact and profit objectives.  The role also involves realizing exits to generate returns for the investors, in a 5-7 year investment cycle.

The individual will also undertake and assume ongoing mentoring and development support within the team of investment professionals, all with the aim of expanding the business and achieving its aim of inclusive, sustainable growth.

Key responsibilities

  • Actively working with portfolio companies post-investment to drive business growth, and to support businesses in operational, strategic and financial matters, and in raising growth capital
  • Supporting portfolio companies through change, growth and emerging market challenges
  • Source, evaluate, develop, negotiate and close deals that support inclusive growth
  • Conduct and co-ordinate due diligence processes for the business’ investing activities
  • Review financial and business plans, prepare investment committee documentation
  • Mentor and guide a team of Investment professionals through the investment process, both formal and informal
  • Business development with the objective to build a strong pipeline of potential investment opportunities, co-investors and potential exit opportunities
  • Coordinate transaction team and transaction execution and closing
  • Create a community of potential board members, and coordinate the activities of portfolio board members

Skills and experience

  • Operational and/or entrepreneurial experience is preferred to primarily transactional expertise
  • Honours Financial degree or equivalent
  • 5-8 years’ experience, of which at least some is within the Private Equity or Investment Banking space (mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance or project finance)
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written, especially business and proposal writing
  • Chartered Financial Analyst (advantageous)
  • Board experience (advantageous)
  • Previous experience in a Big Four or strategic advisory firm (advantageous)
