Smallholders in sub-Saharan Africa rarely reap the full fruits of their labour. Farmers face a number of challenges such as sub-optimal yields, food losses and waste, and unfair market returns.
Crop yields in Africa are the lowest in the world and the continent’s total food output represents just 10% of global production, despite hosting a quarter of the world’s arable land. Low crop yields are a reflection of limited and inadequate inputs and poor agricultural practices. After harvest, avocados in particular are prone to spoilage and in Kenya typically 45% of harvested avocados go to waste due to storage, cooling and transportation constraints.
Origen Fresh partners directly with over 30,000 smallholder farmers across East Africa to produce a variety of high-quality natural oils, specialising in crude avocado oil. The company purchases second and third-grade avocadoes that would otherwise go to waste and transforms them into premium export-grade crude oil for the European market.
Origen Fresh provides training for smallholder farmers to secure favourable crop yields, reduces post-harvest losses and ensures farmers receive fair compensation for their produce.
